My organization, WABA (the Washington Area Bicyclist Association), is working on developing some Spanish-language bike education materials. We're developing Spanish-language learn to ride instruction, as well as some basic riding tips and mechanics information. Do any of you have Spanish-language materials you can share with us, or any tips for creating culturally competent bike resources? I second Ollin on that one, I was part of the Bicitekas team developing that manual so be sure that language and context were both checked several times before publishing it. I'd also like to mention that the manual is based on the traffic regulations and urban context of Mexico City so some things might change depending on the city that you live in, specially since Mexico and United States do not share the same road rules and classification. Cycles for Change in St. Paul, MN implements a Bike Library program; it's less like a short-time "bike share" program and more of a program providing bicycles for long-term (seasonal/6-month) use for low-income community members. Our coop has been approached by several organizations wanting to obtain a number of bikes (from a few bikes to a fleet of similar machines) to start bike shares or bike libraries. Do any of you have any experience working with this type of request? Has anyone supplied bikes for this type of purpose? It is likely that it is beyond the scope of our mission and our supply of volunteer help for such an endeavor. We were considering putting together a list of recommendations for groups wanting to compile a bike share/library system. Do any of you have this type of document or handout and can share with us? Hi everyone! I'm happy to announce that Congreso Nacional de Ciclismo Urbano will be held this year in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas on November 15th - 17th. For those who don't know, BiciCongreso is like the mexican version of BikeBike!, a bunch of bike collectives and organizations from around the country gather to share experiences and knowledge and in the past years we've had folks from the States attending the conference and it's been super awesome. Used jersey/apparel value?

Hi all, We have a number of jerseys and other used cycling apparel items which we have received via donation and have available for sale in our showroom. Compared to bikes, parts, and accessories, the apparel sells much more slowly. Does anyone have a system they use for deciding prices on that sort of thing? We often consult and sell on eBay for things like vintage parts, but jerseys and apparel seem less predictable/consistent. Hey Lauren, I was thinking about your idea of documenting skills and progress of youth. I had worked on related ideas at a previous job, but never got to implement them. I really like the idea of having an analog to merit badges and ranks in the boy/girl scouts. It provides youth something tangible to mark their growth and offers a chance to celebrate achievements. Also, by having both individual 'badges' and class/ranks you can bundle skills. Say for example you wanted to move from a green wrench to a yellow wrench, you would have to not only get your 'badge' for brake and derailleur adjustments, but also a social component (Introducing yourself & others) and a general skills (computer related, inventory?). This could capitalize on bike programs as an opportunity to engage in broader education, particularly if you could find community partners willing to donate trainings. Bike! fundraiser dance party (!!!), I'm actually doing other for real work. Including the exploration of formats, documentation, and reporting for our youth volunteering and Earn-a-Bike programs. Here in British Columbia, high school students are required to complete something like 30 hours of work experience (ie free labour) to graduate, and we get a lot of youth completing this requirement at our shops. We also run pretty informal Earn-a-Bike programs for youth who are in unconventional education settings, accessing social services, in alternative programs, or can't access our in-school programming for any variety of reasons. Lots of these kids are really focused on getting a job, but we can rarely accommodate that. I'm in the process of creating a checklist/worksheet of mechanical and interpersonal skills acquired by youth as they volunteer in our spaces. The idea is that it would include gradients of skill, becoming increasingly more complex as time goes on. It would be used to guide their time in the shop, and also document what they've learned. It would be the youth's responsibility to fill the checklist out over time and have staff sign off on it, and when it's completed, we would write them a letter of recommendation to be used in applying for jobs, school, whateva. Youth Ride Club - insurance?

hey all, we run a weekly 'youthshop' - like open shop for 12-15 year olds one day a week. one of those days per month, we are taking the core youth volunteers and participants on a short ride (on and off street) - approx. 45 min to an hour.... we are calling it Youth Shop Ride Club we have waivers for youthshop, and separate permission forms for the ride. helmets and brakes will be required. bike and safety check will happen before the ride. we own our building and our insurance has liability coverage for in shop activities. any ideas on how to insure the ride portion economically? i have heard that you can get this kind of per participant insurance through the Boy Scouts, but am not sure, and just throwing this out to yall to see if anything comes back. this is aalso what LAB insurance would obviously cover, but since we have building insurance, we we have not gone that route, and as all-volunteer; all donation, our budget is tiny. will also be calling our insurance rep to check in. in the past we have just done permission slips and done rides with no problems,.... and no insurance. Hey everyone! I've been lurking on this listserve for a long time, and i'd like to thank you all for the quality conversation. I'm working with a group of people to start a bike shop in southwest Detroit. we are going through the incorporation process right now, and writing the operating agreement between the Shop (to be an LLC) and the parent (501c3) has been difficult. Does anyone have an example of an operating agreement for this type of relationship? I would love to have something to use as a guide, if for nothing else than to make sure we cover everything that needs to be covered in the operating agreement. Thanks! Positive helmet psa/campaign?

Hello Bikey Friends, A local healthcare organization just released a helmet PSA<http://www.multicare.org/home/helmetfacts>aimed at parents, highlighting the dangers of riding bikes - brain injuries, fatalities, collisions, and other scary stuff. I sent them an email expressing my concern that this PSA will deter parents and children from riding, and that this will actually decrease the safety of bicyclists, not to mention that bicycling is part of a healthy, active lifestyle, etc., etc., etc. Anyway, they were not very responsive to my message, and I would like to send them examples of effective helmet campaigns that highlight safe behavior and helmet use without talking about dying children. Think I replied to the wrong topic last time, For rentals we use a simple form and have a $20 deposit. It works ok but some of our rental bikes never come home. We would love to hear other options. Hey all, sorry been away from the thread for a while. We use QBP and J&B at BICAS. They have both been great in terms of customer service over the years. We are open 7 hours a day, 6 days a week with a woman trans night on our "closed day". I can see that if you dont have regular hours that it may be a problem as the deliveries come whenever they come. I dont have exact numbers but we spend a couple thousand dollars every 2 months at one or the other. I really cant say that we have had any problems with either company and like I said they have been good to work with. I talked with some folks from QBP at interbike and they seem to be pretty receptive to the idea of community bike shops and pretty supportive to the shops in UT and MN ( where they are located). We only order the basics that are hard to find used and we dont undersell our LBS. By policy we do not do special orders for customers but send them to the LBS if they want product other than what we sell. We do special orders for staff but at this point not even for volunteers. It keeps it a good relationship with the LBS. Its unfortunate that some of you have been having difficulties with the distributors but on their end they are just trying to keep backyard mechanics from getting an account. My inclination is to put up a sign, along these lines. "Volunteers worked hard to make these tools available so you can keep rolling. Please leave them for the next cyclist. If you want to help, please contact ____________" You may occasionally lose a little something by trusting too much, but in the long run, you gain so much more. You would need to make the bottle sit upright so it wouldn't leak out if left uncapped. I'd use a couple of hog rings to close the end of the mesh. A thief will get what they want, but the hog rings will prevent casual pilfering and can be easily cut to replace the bottle. some more info to add to the conversation... a few stations are now around Missoula. i think they are working well. all the different companies have improved the air pump, to be more durable. air might be the most valuable asset of a fix it station. for a few years, we locked a few pumps up around town to bike racks. they'd last up to a year. we're a big fan of manual pumps instead of compressors. ---------------------------- Original Message ---------------------------- Subject: RE: lube on fixit?
