Here is your chance to get involved with Gearin' Up Bicycles in Washington D.C.! We are seeking additions members for the Board of Directors, and we invite you to submit your resume and cover letter. Gearin’ Up Bicycles provides access to quality used bicycles in Washington D.C. through used bicycle sales and youth outreach programs. We sell refurbished donated used bicycles and provide employment opportunities for young adults in underserved communities. In addition, Gearin' Up Bicycles partners with local youth organizations to provide Earn-A-Bike programs. Gearin’ Up is growing in all ways -- the number of projects we're working on, volunteer opportunities, and more. The Board Selection Committee of the Gearin’ Up Bicycles is currently seeking applications from prospective Board Members who are passionate about providing greater access to bicycles while providing opportunities to Washington D.C. As a Board Member you will be responsible for three areas: 1. Governance (strategy, planning, fiduciary responsibilities) 2. Involvement in programs/committees that raise awareness and support for Gearin’ Up. 3. Development (raising funds, community awareness and recruiting quality volunteers) Minimum Requirements: * proven experience as a volunteer and fundraiser * interest and ability to be an ambassador for the Gearin’ Up * a commitment to the Gearin’ Up, including time and flexibility to help grow the Gearin’ Up * a board donation and/or a fundraising commitment * practical skills/experience in at least one of the following areas: finance and accounting, non-profit law, PR, marketing, creative/design, project management, business management, urban planning, government, transportation or policy * attendance at monthly Board meetings, Gearin’ Up special events and committee/project meetings Time Commitment: Board meetings are usually one hour every month or every other month. Initial meetings will be held at a central location, and subsequent meetings will be held by telephone. We ask for an additional 2-5 hours/month to work on specific tasks or projects. We ask Board Members to serve for at least 1 year with a strong preference for 2 years of service. Liability Waiver?

Hello folks across the pond! Recently, our friends at the London Bike Kitchen had their first conflict with a customer. He came into the workshop with a fancy Cannondale CAAD10 with a press fit BB20 bottom bracket, and he verbally agreed to their Terms & Conditions. However, the student turned out to be quite difficult - not listening to instructions, questioning instructions, consulting the internet, etc. During the BB installation process, the instructor forgot to put in the shims before the bearings were pressed in, so they had to get knocked out. Somewhere along the line, the inside of the BB shell was damaged, and there is disagreement between the instructor and the student about what happened/whose fault it is, etc. Now the student is asking for £800 to replace his frame, which could be deadly for a small bike shop. Following this, we’re having a lot of discussion in the UK bike community about how to approach these difficult situations. Has anyone dealt with a problem like this before? Does anyone have an effective liability waiver that covers both the customer and the shop? City Bike Plans: Do Collectives Connect Community Voices to Planning?

Dear all, Some Alta Planning + Design consultants who are assisting the City of Columbus, OH on their bike plan update asked me for advice about their communication campaign, such as best practices for outreach. I brought up bike co-ops and told them about Bike! Bike! being held in Columbus this year. I'm wondering what role collectives organizers/volunteers can play or have played as connectors, getting community voices heard that wouldn't otherwise make it to the city level. Or do bike plans seem totally disconnected from co-op concerns? If there's interest in having some kind of community conversation about what role co-ops can play in connecting more people to bike planning, let me know and I'll put you in touch with the Alta folks. A velodrome is typically made of wood and has ramped corners to accommodate a racer’s high speed in sharp turns; they may be built as outdoor or indoor tracks. According to USA Cycling there are:29 velodromes in 22 states 29 cities with velodromes19,355 cities in the USA Detroit is one of the 19,326 cities WITHOUT a velodrome.Detroit is FORTUNATE because there is one velodrome - only 25 miles outside of the city Rochester Hills, MI. Because of the invisibility of the sport, BikeVON and the International Velodrome of Bloomer Park in Rochester Hills, Michigan provided a motivator of a stipend for the children. They will receive $270 for 6 weeks of training to “ride” a bike. Training is 3 days a week for 2 hours. All equipment and coaching is free. Since this is a little known spot, Wayne State University’s Kinesiology Department will conduct yearlong study on the sport. This is the information needed to apply for funding. Please before you suggested to ask for any services, I have asked, community organizations, major non-profits for kids in the health, wellness and fitness no one is giving for these assorted reasons: *remember the track in this area is 1 out of 29 in the USA. and no it is not portable* 1. Community organizations will only grant money if the program is within their community. 2. Major grantors want the program within the city limits.3. Major grantors want the $$$ IRS and audit records. 4. What can I provide in advertising coverage?5. Church organizations did not want to donated $$$ to support the stipend or bus use because the church did not want to be liable. Online I raised $2,500 out of pocket expenses are over that. From printing materials, paying people, travel expenses, web development etc. I am leaking money. I gave a fund raiser is March and did not make ANY money. My target audience is kids 13 - 18 years old. I have been in contact with Boys and Girls clubs, community and youth organizations, schools, churches, youth build a bike programs and bike shops. In March, I went to a youth meeting an 26 kids signed up. I took just name and email address. Going in, I knew transportation was going to be any issue. School bus rental quotes were anywhere from $148 - $250 per trip and there are 18 trips in the program. For me to rent a van then there are bonding issues. When the contribution $$$ topped off, I was asking the parents to car pool and I would supply gas $$$. I started with 10 kids. By the March fund raiser there were 7 and by the first weekend in May two kids. During May we have try-outs we offered to give each child $10 to come for try-outs. If 3 kids from the same organization came they would receive $13. Parent / guardian had to come to sign liability waivers. For the first weekend on one came. Graduations and other things going on. For the second weekend 4 students signed up at one school and I was counting on another to contact me. The transportation company needs at least 10 days notice. These wonderful people were working on a 3 day turn around for me. I rented a school bus. On that Saturday no one came. The reason were busy schedules and parents could not come with the child. With the holiday weekend approaching, I did not even think about organization anything. I am emailing and knocking on doors with a start date of June 7th. Questions:1. I need a fund raiser to replenish my funds. If I have to pay for transportation, I cannot use the money for kids' stipend. My savings are dwindling. 2. How to motivate the kids.3. Advertising. I have written the local newspapers, television stations, the African American news paper. No one seems to think it is an interesting story to cover. We're developing Spanish-language learn to ride instruction, as well as some basic riding tips and mechanics information. I second Ollin on that one, I was part of the Bicitekas team developing that manual so be sure that language and context were both checked several times before publishing it. I'd also like to mention that the manual is based on the traffic regulations and urban context of Mexico City so some things might change depending on the city that you live in, specially since Mexico and United States do not share the same road rules and classification. Cycles for Change in St. Paul, MN implements a Bike Library program; it's less like a short-time "bike share" program and more of a program providing bicycles for long-term (seasonal/6-month) use for low-income community members. Bike Share and Bike Libraries

Our coop has been approached by several organizations wanting to obtain a number of bikes (from a few bikes to a fleet of similar machines) to start bike shares or bike libraries. Do any of you have any experience working with this type of request? Has anyone supplied bikes for this type of purpose? It is likely that it is beyond the scope of our mission and our supply of volunteer help for such an endeavor. We were considering putting together a list of recommendations for groups wanting to compile a bike share/library system. Do any of you have this type of document or handout and can share with us? Innovative Signage

Our shop is set back off of a fairly busy road with no good permanent signage. Has anyone had any success building a large, effective sign that can be brought in and out (and perhaps secured?) each day? Hi everyone! I'm happy to announce that Congreso Nacional de Ciclismo Urbano will be held this year in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas on November 15th - 17th. For those who don't know, BiciCongreso is like the mexican version of BikeBike!, a bunch of bike collectives and organizations from around the country gather to share experiences and knowledge and in the past years we've had folks from the States attending the conference and it's been super awesome. Used jersey/apparel value?

Hi all, We have a number of jerseys and other used cycling apparel items which we have received via donation and have available for sale in our showroom. Compared to bikes, parts, and accessories, the apparel sells much more slowly. Does anyone have a system they use for deciding prices on that sort of thing? We often consult and sell on eBay for things like vintage parts, but jerseys and apparel seem less predictable/consistent. Hey Lauren, I was thinking about your idea of documenting skills and progress of youth. I had worked on related ideas at a previous job, but never got to implement them. I really like the idea of having an analog to merit badges and ranks in the boy/girl scouts. It provides youth something tangible to mark their growth and offers a chance to celebrate achievements. Also, by having both individual 'badges' and class/ranks you can bundle skills. Say for example you wanted to move from a green wrench to a yellow wrench, you would have to not only get your 'badge' for brake and derailleur adjustments, but also a social component (Introducing yourself & others) and a general skills (computer related, inventory?). This could capitalize on bike programs as an opportunity to engage in broader education, particularly if you could find community partners willing to donate trainings. Bike! fundraiser dance party (!!!), I'm actually doing other for real work. Including the exploration of formats, documentation, and reporting for our youth volunteering and Earn-a-Bike programs. Here in British Columbia, high school students are required to complete something like 30 hours of work experience (ie free labour) to graduate, and we get a lot of youth completing this requirement at our shops. We also run pretty informal Earn-a-Bike programs for youth who are in unconventional education settings, accessing social services, in alternative programs, or can't access our in-school programming for any variety of reasons. Lots of these kids are really focused on getting a job, but we can rarely accommodate that. I'm in the process of creating a checklist/worksheet of mechanical and interpersonal skills acquired by youth as they volunteer in our spaces. The idea is that it would include gradients of skill, becoming increasingly more complex as time goes on. It would be used to guide their time in the shop, and also document what they've learned. It would be the youth's responsibility to fill the checklist out over time and have staff sign off on it, and when it's completed, we would write them a letter of recommendation to be used in applying for jobs, school, whateva. Youth Ride Club - insurance?

hey all, we run a weekly 'youthshop' - like open shop for 12-15 year olds one day a week. one of those days per month, we are taking the core youth volunteers and participants on a short ride (on and off street) - approx. 45 min to an hour.... we are calling it Youth Shop Ride Club we have waivers for youthshop, and separate permission forms for the ride. helmets and brakes will be required. bike and safety check will happen before the ride. we own our building and our insurance has liability coverage for in shop activities. any ideas on how to insure the ride portion economically? i have heard that you can get this kind of per participant insurance through the Boy Scouts, but am not sure, and just throwing this out to yall to see if anything comes back. this is aalso what LAB insurance would obviously cover, but since we have building insurance, we we have not gone that route, and as all-volunteer; all donation, our budget is tiny. will also be calling our insurance rep to check in. in the past we have just done permission slips and done rides with no problems,.... and no insurance. Hey everyone! I've been lurking on this listserve for a long time, and i'd like to thank you all for the quality conversation. I'm working with a group of people to start a bike shop in southwest Detroit. we are going through the incorporation process right now, and writing the operating agreement between the Shop (to be an LLC) and the parent (501c3) has been difficult. Does anyone have an example of an operating agreement for this type of relationship? I would love to have something to use as a guide, if for nothing else than to make sure we cover everything that needs to be covered in the operating agreement. Thanks!
