We also changed our model from having one shop manager to creating multiple job positions with defined descriptions. We have two paid mechanics and a volunteer coordinator and a youth coordinator. We also have set up teams with different responsibilities that can be shared with volunteers. This also leads the way to having a more community run organization. We are still working on it, but our new model is proving more successful in eliminating bottlenecks, staff overload and getting more volunteers involved. Hey Everyone, I hope the slow traffic on the list of late is a factor of everyone getting some good back-end planning time. In the past few years, we've collected a decent stack of bicycle repair and other type of bike books (things like Lance Armstrong's book, or local mountain bike trail guidebooks, etc). We'd like to do something productive with these, and it occurred to me that we could lend them out to members. Does anyone else have something similar? The thread on housing storage reminded me of a shop I visited in Montreal called SOS Velo. Not so much in terms of parts storage but in creative ways of using bike parts. When re-Cycles was entering its partnership with Cycle Salvation the visit was made so that both orgs. could see a large-scale bicycle recycling centre in operation. This shop is a fully-funded place that not only recycles bikes but also provides "a unique program that ensures the social and professional integration of people who have trouble finding and keeping jobs". This places recycles everything! If it can no longer be used on a bike it gets turned into bike art, and some of it is very cool indeed. Hey Everyone. Hope those of you getting the snow are staying dry and warm... Community Cycles in Boulder has just wrapped up phase one of a huge remodel. We tore out some walls, are putting in a nice retail front end showroom, and things are really coming together. We had tons of help from volunteers, and Chris from the Park Hill Bike Depot in Denver came up and moved some electrical work for us. Amazing. Anyway, here's a pretty cool photo of one of the upgrades. The Community Partners Bike Library will provide bicycles, fully equipped for transportation purposes, for 6-month loan to low-income community members. The Bike Library will additionally provide under-served communities with classes in safe cycling, bike maintenance, and commuting, and support in acquiring a bicycle for long-term use at the termination of the loan period. Quad Bikes is Hiring a New Manager! Founded in 2003, Quad Bikes has provided repairs and quality refurbished and new bicycles to the Harvard University community ever since. We are presently looking for an operations manager to handle the administrative side of the shop. Enthusiasm for cycling is a must, but experience repairing bicycles is an asset, not a necessity. Training in bicycle repair will be available. Candidates will benefit from past work in a non-profit environment and being organized, efficient and reliable. Familiarity with Quickbooks and non-profit incorporation and law will also be major assets. The job will entail considerable interaction with customers so a friendly and approachable attitude is a must. The position will entail meeting with a number of on-campus offices on a regular basis, such as Commuter Choice, Harvard Recycling and the Harvard Police. Quad Bikes is responsible for the tagging and removal of abandoned bikes left on campus. The job will entail organizing this program with The Harvard administration. Quad Bikes refurbishes many of these bikes to be sold. The position provides an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience running a non-profit bike shop, while working with a group of young people passionate about biking. We are looking for an individual with a strong sense of customer service, good organizational skills and supervisory experience to manage everything from day-to-day operations to long-term planning. Specific areas of responsibility will be: managing a small team of young people, maintaining the shop website and mailing list, ordering parts and supplies, paying taxes and bills, and maintaining payroll and finances. Gah. Hit the wrong key and my incomplete message went out... South America and Asia are definitely under represented. Does anyone know of or have contacts in these areas? I remember someone at San Francisco having done some kind of bike work in Nepal, I believe. Also, if you haven't checked it out yet, please do. It's a tremendous help for those organizing and communicating with groups for things like regional bikebikes and the international BikeBikes. There have been a lot of additions since many of you checked in and updated your listing. There's more columns, including mission statement, and one I just added, the process for your volunteers. Also, some of you may not have noticed the second page. It's a chart that allows people to post a question or issue they're facing in the first row, and then others can address it. So far us and Salt Lake City are the only groups to have posted there. I have high hopes for that page. If you don't have access to the spreadsheet, or want to check it out, please let me know. Hey, I had drafted an email about travel plans, but decided to put off sending it until closer to the date. Here is some pertinent information: Flying to Buffalo and then taking another form of transit to Toronto will be the best and cheapest way, if you have to take a plane. This is what we did to get to San Fransisco last year! There are potentially VERY cheap megabus (http://www.megabus.com/us/) and greyhound (www.greyhound.com) busses. the earlier you book the cheaper it will be. these will take you right into the city. Some Greyhound routes are express (Toronto to NY) and can be as cheap as $2 each way if you find a deal. you can also take the train, but bare in mind you may have to switch trains when it goes from amtrak to viarail (http://www.viarail.ca/en) crossing the border. Driving is about 90 minutes from Buffalo to Toronto and taking the bus it is 2-3hours, factoring in the border crossing. If you do fly into toronto, Pearson International Airport is the largest one and serves all major airlines. It is accessible by transit (a bus takes you directly to the end of the subway line which then takes you into the city), or if you want you could put your bike together and bike in from there - though you have to cross some highway, so it may not be for the faint of heart. We can get the best recommended cycling route for anyone interested in doing that. Toronto Island Airport is right in the harbour on Lake Ontario. They are only serviced by Porter Airlines (http://www.flyporter.com), who fly to a few major cities including Boston, Chicago and New York. They sometimes have competitive rates, and are very accessible to the core of the city. Hope that helps.
