Bike Bike Bay Area Regional Conference

Hey all, I'm a member of spokeland and had the pleasure of attending Bike Bike LA this year, which was a thoroughly rewarding experience. Reaching out to any folks who want to work together on hosting a Bay Area regional conference, which I suppose would also appeal to various west coasters and Bike Bike addicts of any location. Goal: Bring together Bay Area bike projects, especially those who could or did not attend Bike Bike LA this year. Create support to participate at the 2019 International Bike Bike in Tijuana! I've submitted a preliminary request to book the ballroom at the Omni Commons March 16-17 for the event. There are movable gallery walls to create break-out session partitions, a "bar" with sink/drains and refrigeration for food service, and it is wheelchair accessible with a free-standing elevator/lift to rise above the ~6 steps from the entrance hall to the ballroom floor level. Spokeland members who have had the chance to discuss are excited, and pending confirmations, we all want to focus a lot of efforts on access and accessibility, especially for folks with different mobility than the stereotypical cyclist. 3D Bicycle Fenders

Thank you so much for all the responses to my request for information about experience with 3D fenders. I feel like you all have provided me with some very good options. At least a couple of the responses have included a question of why we might be pursuing our own manufacture of fenders. So, I have had to really think about that. But I do believe we have a need for making our own fenders. We rely on donations and fenders are not commonly donated. They are relatively expensive to buy. if we do buy them then it would be tough for us to offer them on low cost/free bikes. I really like the instructables reference provided in one of the responses. The idea of re-purposing a disposable plastic bottle into a reasonable quality bike fender fits our mission just right. My thanks again to all the responses. 3D Printed Fenders/Mudgaurds?

Anyone out there in ThinkTank land have experience with 3D printers and/or ever tried 3D print manufacturing of fenders with such technology? At Front Street Community Bike Works in Coos Bay, OR, we are considering ~$3,000 purchase of specialized tooling to make aluminum fenders. That is a very big investment for us. Then we learned about the potential of using 3D printing to make fenders. We have no experience with 3D printing but the idea intrigues me. LA Is the Worst Cycling City in the United States

This article hit me especially hard after experiencing LA cycling at Bike!Bike! this year: https://www.bicycling.com/culture/a23566413/los-angeles-is-the-worst-bike-c… I was impressed with Ciclavia but after spending the last next week with my friend in West LA (traveling soley by car) I saw how the city is designed completely around cars. I think it is a confused document. First, there has to be a balance between groups & individuals. Second, there does need to be standards. Standards which can be challenged. Third, while it is true that standards of values can cause troubles in that they can become dogmatic, there still needs to standards of values within a framework that can allow adjustment. Fourth, there does have to be elements of "management". A shop cannot be run successful run over any period of time without rules & management. Fifth, I am not sure it is "white culture" that is designating certain ways of thinking, as people of color are involved in that construction & its continuation, while there are whites who are for moving onto a new system. Individuals need power within organizations, there needs to be a framework in which to work. There cannot be such as, "everyone is allowed~ except 'vehicular cyclists' & 'whites'". That is only perpetuating a power structure that is supposedly being rejected. It is time to move on from these restrictive views that have failed & will continue to fail. Empowerment of the individual & individual dignity cannot be graced unto people from an organization, it can be fostered, encouraged, yes, yet it must, ultimately, come from someone's own core. This core is not "white" or any other particular color. To say that is to naturally limit responses, created resistance that would not be there, otherwise, & strains the tenets of any new concept of existence. Arguments made against any present structures that exist, which one would like to be different, must be much more definably aimed at & not generalized into a general "us versus them". Cultures are not monolithic, which is part of the point. To assign a type of thinking or argument to a race is racist. Again, fighting against the presumable change pushed for. To over emphasize the power of groups over the individual will cause resistance as many individuals want to be free from such authoritarian concepts. As well as those who over emphasize the power of the individual without any acknowledgement of any 'collective' leads to isolation, allows oppression in other forms &, too, is a failed path to follow. Individual empowerment & dignity has something to do with culture & heritage, yet, is still, at heart, a personal matter. Values are internal, internally taken, can be influenced from without, but, also, internally generated. However, people, in their souls know what is right & wrong. To not say so is a cop out to shift responsibility from oneself to "the state", allowing bad behaviour to be excused, leading into a cycle of dysfunction & failure. Our shop is heavily skillshare/mutual aid oriented. Our volunteer nights are pretty much invitation only. I say pretty much because we do post advertisements for it from time on Facebook (eww), but there we specify that we need trained mechanics or at least people with some mechanical experience. If we're doing construction or such, we'll advertise that we need people with experience with those kinds of tools. Generally when we feel someone is coming up to speed in terms of skills during normal open shop time, we tell them about volunteer night (sometimes called Monday Night Work Party) and ask them to show up; by making it invitation only, we can also do a bit of screening at these times for gender and cultural balance. If we're severely white-dude-heavy at a given time, we may refrain from invites until someone capable and not a white dude presents themselves. This is not because white dudes suck, it's to keep the social chemistry of the shop more representative of the city demographics. Our mission is to use cycling, community, and knowledge of bicycle mechanics to empower all people, but explicitly has a mandate to reach out to, include, and ultimately in part comprise ourselves of communities of color and marginalized/threatened people in general. We are explicitly working to dismantle patriarchy. Volunteers are also welcome during open shop, many of the people helping other people on any given night are volunteers. We also often have people sorting parts and whatnot during open shop. As long as it doesn't get in the way, sometimes people even do things like mow the lawn or cut back vines. Since open shop is not invitation only, open shop is often when we get unskilled volunteers that just want to do small or simple things. Open shop nights are also great times for volunteer training; people who want to learn something typically don't have to stand around long before some fundamental process like truing a wheel or repacking a bottom bracket is getting taught to a participant. The volunteer can sit in and learn at the same time as the participant. The line between participant and volunteer is very thin; basically it comes down to whether you're working on your own bike or not. We get totally random turnout with these methods. Some volunteer nights, we have five dedicated people tasking it up, other nights it's just staff (often literally just me), but it still really is useful because work can be done without distraction. Some open shop days we have several volunteers, others we have none and it's just staff. Full disclosure: we are also not a volunteer-run shop. Volunteer Question

I volunteer at Broke Spoke Community Bike Shop here in Lexington, KY. We are currently a 100% volunteer run community bike shop that is open the following hours: Wednesday 6-9 pm Volunteer Only Night, Thursday 6-9 pm Open Shift and Sunday 1-5 pm Open Shift. To clarify, our Volunteer Night is for volunteers to come in and work on bikes that have been donated to us along with other tasks such as parts sorting. We do not offer sales or service to the public on Wednesdays. Open shifts are open to the public for individuals to come in rent our workstands and do work on their own bikes and shop for bikes and/or parts. Open shifts are staffed by a manager and trained volunteer mechanics. Volunteer Nights are staffed with a manager and 1-2 long term volunteers along with an unlimited number of volunteers that range from complete novices to regular volunteers. My questions for the ThinkTank is regarding our Volunteer Night, if you have a similar volunteer-only night: (1) Do you limit the number of volunteers? and if so (2) How do you implement this limitation? The reason for my questions is that sometime we have more volunteers than we can find quality tasks for them to do. I'm just hoping to help people clear their garages of unwanted youth bikes, and then in turn, provide them for inner city youth here in Chattanooga that need them and could use them for Christmas. How to cross a street

Hello, we are making a video on how it is to cross streets in our city, Monterrey, Mexico. The idea is to compare different cities around the world on how it is to cross a street, this is to demonstrate that even thought we have excellent laws on hot to move around the city, the reality is far far from what it is written. So we are asking for inputs on how it is to cross a street in your cities. It can be a short video (-15-20s) on and intersection (with or without traffic lights) and can be recorded on a cellphone or a camera. We attach a video we record with a go pro attache to a bike helmet on a 720 resolution, and unfortunately we are not able to see the plates of the cab that yelled profanities to the woman crossing the street . It will be of great help to have the videos of your cities and use them on creating some conscience. Thanks in advance and so much fun to all of you going to B!B! Ride from San Fran to bike!bike!

Hey good bike peoples Myself and my partner Camille are currently biking down the west coast en route to bike!Bike! but don't have time to ride all the way to LA so we're hoping to catch a lift (along with our bikes) on the 27th or so. Right now our schedule has us on track to arrive in Bodega Bay late on the 26th and lagunitas late on the 27th. That said we're happy to catch a bus earlier into San Rafael or San Fran if it means we can catch a ride with someone to LA. We're happy to pitch in for gas of course and can regale you with stories of the road! Winter Riding Program in Peterborough Ontario

In a city that experiences winter the way we do, it can be a challenge to encourage winter ridership. Winter Wheels was highly successful in making big behavior changes (be it for a relatively small group of people). The final report for the program is attached. At B!B! this year, Josh Bisker and I will be hosting a workshop full of bite-size presentations: Partnerships, Engagement, Design, and Access Lectures (PEDALs!). The plan is to gather five to seven organizers to present five-to-seven-minute talks about one innovative project that they've been involved with this year. Hey Rosa, My experience suggests that this is a fairly common set up for co-ops and non-profit shops. It is done because in a lot of places the rules around what you can sell (and for how much) for non-profits are pretty strict, which can make it difficult to get designated as such. It can also be hard to get distributor accounts when you don't sell "traditionally". Any collective can co-own any kind of organization, so if non-profit status isn't important it's just a matter of putting the collective members on the paperwork and ensuring any profits are appropriately distributed. There should be a fairly straightforward legal model for this already in place in your locality. As to how well it works, is it a good idea/a bad idea? I think it depends on who sets it up (and why, and who it ultimately serves vs. who is it meant to serve). In my personal experience, there was an ongoing power (and resource) struggle between the the nonprofit and the for profit entity-- reorganizing them on paper produced an actual reorganization in how people related to one another-- and I think it was very bad. It was the wrong decision for our group and we didn't really fully understand it when we did it. It didn't have to end up like that, but we really struggled to understand the legal structure and it created a lot of difficulties and strife and it had a lot to do with the money-- who was making the money, who "got" to spend it, quality of work experience based on the cash flow, things like that. I think that's something to at least spend some time talking about before leaping in and getting it off the ground. Cash really has a way of affecting a group's dynamics. The pressures of operating a commercially successful shop can also be at odds with collectivist values and norms. Hope that helps. Hi folks! I am currently pursing dual master's degrees in Env. Sciences and Public Administration. One of my courses is Urban Transit, and a project for it is a mock presentation tailored for a City Counsel study session. Another organization in town already focuses on advocating for infrastructure and we already have a bike share, so I would like to 'educate council' on bicycle co-ops. Has anyone done this? Or even better (maybe I'm dreaming), but does anyone know of any co-ops that are city-sponsored in some form? Sylvie

Hi Aida, I've built a few. My family ran a little bike pedaled smoothy biz briefly. Sweetpedals.com I use a standard rack, with a front hub, connected to a roller skate wheel. I use Oster brand blenders, don't think that part matters but I got several from the 70's for cheap. The thing for us is that we needed to have multiple blender canister that fit the base. Tips for Building a Bike Blender?

Hey bike buds, So, it turns out people love bike blenders, and over the last couple weeks we've had a bunch of requests for them at the Mechanical Gardens. Have you made a bike blender? What worked and what didn't? We're looking to build something simple and functional, preferably with no/minimal welding. Any recommendations, instructions, and/or photos would be much appreciated! Shop repair stands

Hello everyone. This email is for asking on reocmendations on repair stands. Since you have been uploading the DIY ones we have some odeas on doing some to move around but on the shop we have been using a portable plastic repair stand and we have decided on buying a shop one that might last longer and will make it easier to fix bikes (the plastic ones usually dont support heavy bikes and we have suffer some accidents with bike moving down the stand) Some time bak we looked at teh park tool deluxe stand and now that we might be able to purchase it we find out that the base is not included and that costs $300 more. So, any recomendations on a shop stand, not the plastic ones, that we can buy with $400 us dollars? Or have you made your own base to put the park tool stand that has worked? Thanks R.

Incentivizing regular shifts in volunteer run shops!

Hey Folks! We at Kickstand community Bike Shop in East Vancouver have had ongoing challenges with staying open for all our our regular shop hours because we sometimes do not have enough volunteers signed up to volunteer to facilitate our volunteer-run shop on a given day. Does anyone have strategies for encouraging volunteer commitment and regular shifts so that we can reliably open for our posted hours? Obviously, transitioning to having paid staff is one pathway, though there are probably many other alternatives that would meet our needs and encourage community participation in keeping the space open. Re Shop Repair stands

We have bought several PRS 2.2 stands after having used first cheap chinese stands then portable Park Tool stands which we still use for events or when we have lots of volunteers. We also have a double headed Unior stand but this is not as well made as the PRS2.2 If you are not in a hurry look for a used PRS 2.2. We bought our first one on Gumtree which is our local version of craigslist. It was over 15 years old and the only sign of wear was on the rubber grips which are replaceable. PRS2.2 are basically volunteer proof as everything is heavy duty metal. We bought half inch plate and had the dealer bore and counter bore the holes by bringing in the stand as a template. This is important as one of the 4 holes is slightly off centre so that you get correct directional alignment if you are copying the original plates. Cost including drilling was around $100 US and the cost of labour in Australia is higher than the U.S. We like double headed stands as it allows experienced volunteers to continue with a project while also assisting a less experienced volunteer when they need advice. This is a reply to Fabian's question re; Travel equity fundraising a while back. Winnipeg raised over $2000 last year for the travel equity fund through a series of monthly bike builds we did for the 4 months leading up to the B!B! conference. We figured that building & selling some bikes was a lot easier than organizing yet another fundraiser, so once a month The Wrench hosted a friday night beer (byob) pizza (paid for by The WRENCH) and wrenching night. We invited any and all mechanics who wanted to contribute to B!B! organizing in an easy, tangible way to come out and wrench on bikes for a few hours. Over 4 such nights we built and subsequently sold 20 bikes with all the proceeds going directly towards the bikebike travel equity fund. It was a really easy way to plug in folks from the extended mechanic community who wanted to contribute to organizing but not in a "sit in meetings" or "deal with piles of emails" sort of way. Winnipeg is blessed with a pretty good stock of donated/salvaged bikes in the summer, so this initiative didn't really "cost" The WRENCH aside from paying for any required consumables (cables, housing, lube) and some cheap pizza once a month. And if we build them, they tend to sell without too much effort. I'd recommend this method to any shops who might want to contribute to raising some $$$ for this important fund. That said, Winnipeg is laying low this summer, so don't expect another 2G coming from us! Sorry! Lookin forward to LA!
