Momoko, I just wanted to say that your questions and comments here resonate for us at Troy Bike Rescue - also a long-time all-volunteer shop. We recently went through a pretty trying situation in which a long-time member was finally held accountable by fellow members after months of nothing being said and other collective members feeling disrespected or ceasing to participate as a result (or things were only being said in smaller/private groups). We do have a conflict resolution clause to our bylaws, and we did have professional mediation on deck in the case that it would be necessary or useful - but either of those only work with full cooperation from all parties.... and before that if grievances are actually voiced and then actually *heard* by the offending party. In the end the member was asked to leave the collective and was banned from the space until they agreed to participate in mediation. We are re-grouping, getting shit done, and hopeful for a fresh re-start as springtime rolls around. What you bring up is a really tough and important area of discussion, but I dont think we have the answer. We dont feel like our dealing with it was in any way exemplary, though our core group feels like a lot was learned, and we will certainly be on guard for red flags in the future..... but could things have been less painful and less drawn-out had something been different on an organizational level? probably? Quaker third party mediations. Following up with conflict res training for all key volunteers. It didnt work for my case but respect in the process needs to be fundemental in order for respect to be gained in the volunteer space. Its also important to do things fast. Taking a year or more to settle a conflict leaves details out and makes all parties in conflict in the lurch adding to tensions in the overall community. Hey friends! Sara writing you from chilly, lovely, and friendly Fargo, North Dakota, currently sitting right at 1 degree Fahrenheit! I'm a past member of the Fargo Moorhead Community Bicycle Workshop, most recently was working in the public library as the storytime superhero, and now back in the saddle with a bike-centered non-profit called Great Rides Fargo, which is dedicated to creating healthy individuals and communities with the almighty bike. Great Rides Fargo has been rolling on a small scale for 3 years, doing outreach with bike rodeos, youth programming, and a toting around a trailer of bikes. A number of projects have come together leading to it's growth and to my luck getting the position as the Director of Operations. Things we have going on: we will be launching a *bike share program* (using b-cycles) this spring with 11 stations and 101 bikes, we will be acquiring 2 *pedicabs, *and additionally taking over a roll of helping carry on *open streets community event* (3 to 5 mile loop open to only human powered traffic) . It's a lot of awesome and at the same time I'm feeling a little overwhelmed by all the possibilities and it has been a number of years since I have been in touch with friends in the cycling community! The last Bike! Bike! my partner Joe and I were able to attend was in beautiful Vancouver. Leasehold tax exemption with retail space?

We are operating on city property for free in exchange for the programs and outreach we do to get more individuals on bicycles. As a part of our work, we operate a retail space. The state has decided that we are not exempt from leasehold tax because we operate a retail space and they want to charge us 13% of the leased property's value per year. Let's just say, it's a lot of money in taxes if you consider the "potential" value of the space. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this issue and whether or not you were able to come to a favorable decision that was reasonable for your organization's budget. What we do with 1500 kids bikes each year

In short, we do this; https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0HJNUHA3wmIMnFLRjVWVk9hUFk/view So here in Winnipeg the community bike shops have had an agreement with the city landfill for the past 7 years where they put aside all the bicycles in the scrap metal area and we go out there once a month to sort/strip and harvest them. For 3 years we mostly scrapped the 1000s of 20" and under kids bikes that we didn't have the capacity to repair or store. Four years ago we came up with the idea for Cycle of Giving, a 24 hour kids bike building marathon. We invite volunteer mechanics from the city's 7 community bike shops, the for-profit shops, and anyone else who wants to come out to do a shift to spend between 6-24 hours building as many kids bikes (20" wheels or less) as they can. Last year we built 315 bikes in 24 hours and distributed them, free of charge, along with helmets and hand-made cards, to 14 different inner city youth service agencies. It's a fundraiser too, although we never seem to make much money (this year we got sponsors to make ends meet). But it's a damned good time with great bands (this year via the pedal powered sound system), amazing food, lots of glitter and eggnog and a whack of rad folks drinking too much coffee and slinging wrenches all night long. We always get great media too. The remaining kids bikes go to the bike repair vocational program for folks recovering from addictions in the local correctional facility. More details on that in some other email. Point is, annually we manage to turn those 1500 kids bikes in the landfill into 1000 working bikes for youth under 10 years of age. I am soliciting the advice of fellow cooperatives who currently employ paid staffers. Our organization has grown enough in it's 10 year history that we are prepared to bring on a part time paid staffer for the summer and fall months of next year. If there is anyone who would feel comfortable chatting with me either via a series of emailed questions or over the phone I would greatly appreciate it. We considered this fairly extensively, including drafting a few designs and pricing the parts/toold/time to put it together. We found that it was MUCH simpler and about the same cost to get a Fixit Station from Dero. When I approached the Transportation Demand Management Planner for the City and told her about the project, they were actually really supportive of the idea--Peterborough now has four Fixit stations which were purchased by the city and our shop is paid by the city to maintain them! That said, the vast majority of people using the station use the pump. We have had many problems with the Dero pumps and actually just replaced them with the outdoor gauged pumps from Fixtation. So far, we are really pleased and they work very well. The teens had just traveled to Washington, DC for the first time ever to attend the League of American Bicyclists’ National Bike Summit. While they were awe-struck by all they had learned – from the Safe Routes to School bill, to lobbying elected officials on Capitol Hill, to exploring the nation’s capital by bike, and even to meeting mountain bike pioneer Gary Fisher – they couldn’t help but wonder where all the young people were. For if bicycle policy affected all cyclists, then certainly all cyclists should be represented at the decision-making table. As the team debriefed their experiences, a blueprint for the Youth Bike Summit began to emerge. While the teens initially hoped for a moderate showing of youth, educators, and bicycle advocates from the New York area, it quickly became clear that the the Youth Bike Summit would attract a much broader audience – from near and (very) far! For each and every year that followed, the Youth Bike Summit, its impact, and its momentum, continued to grow. We are excited to start a new chapter and to have you all along for the exciting years ahead. Hi All, In the process of planning our regional/mini Bike!Bike! in Boise, we had an idea we'd like to put out and see if there's interest. In addition to the conference, we're considering leading an LCI Training session <http://bikeleague.org/content/become-instructor> for any attendees who would like to get certified. How do you run it? I would like to host an evening where folks who identify as women/trans are able to come work on/learn about bike maintenance/safety in a welcoming environment... I want to increase the availability and number of bikes in a neighborhoods. I am writing an agreement with a couple of community centers with these requirements: 1.During the winter they have to provide transportation to a build-a-bike class for kids. Hopefully, about 40 kids total will want to do because the centers will have to pay to get a bus. 2. I will give the community centers approx. 15 or 20 bikes. They will have to maintain the bikes, and have weekly rides with adult ride leaders. 3.I will teach ride safely classes 4. I will need them to collect relevant data, which I need to use later. Programmer for Volunteer scheduling application?

A volunteer began working on a web-based application that I would describe as a combination of Doodle and Meetup. It draws from Google Calendar to create events, which can then be modified with data such as staff requirements. Reminders are emailed to volunteers, who can then click links directly from their email to sign up for shifts and events without having to log in. They can bookmark a link to view their calendar with shifts they've signed up for. Somehow, the volunteer who was working on it disappeared completely and is not responding to any attempts at contact after several months (we're a little concerned). The program seems to be about 75% complete, it functions on a basic level. You can see it at http://volunteer.meinstein.org The code is posted online at https://github.com/jrkoch/volunteer . The programming language appears to be Ruby on Rails 4 (I don't know nuthin about this). I am reaching out for assistance with completing this program because I believe this would be a very useful application for our organization and possibly for others on this list (and beyond). If anyone has alternate recommendations I welcome them. I've already checked out VolunteerSpot and it seems to require entering events manually, and since I'm already doing that on Google Calendar, Facebook, and Meetup, I'd rather not do that, too.
