Traffic-calming mural art

Hi bikey friends! I'm on the board for our neighborhood organization and over the years have gotten the general conversation to budge beyond people who complain about car parking... bit by bit! So now they are tearing out our single family bungalows en masse and building apartment complexes to the scale of 350+ units each. Four in less than two years, all within 8 blocks of us. We bought in this community because of the transit accessibility, but we still have those TERRIBLE 20-inch ankle-breaking rollover sidewalks and pisspoor intersections, etc. We're simply not at all accommodated to take the blow of adding thousands more car trips each day, and we've also created lots more cement. It's clearly time for some traffic-calming efforts that our officials would otherwise tend to in about year 2050. I've been bringing to the board the thought of doing some murals (we also face a large freeway retaining wall, so there's PLENTY of canvass!) that raise bike/ped/transit awareness. The general response has always been YES - great idea! But no one actually does anything. I see all the mini-grants from Safe Routes and other usual suspects, but I can't submit for them, even with the weight of the RNO behind me, without at least a handful of things to show them. I've put out an open call for artists and an open call for image sample ideas and gotten squat. I'm guessing that I'm asking the wrong people. Why would the group that goes to monthly meetings to complain that there is no longer street parking directly in front of their home going to deliver traffic-calming sample images to my inbox?? *It occurs to me - YOU are the right people!! * *Please send/share your favorite, most impactful traffic-calming images* that share bike/ped/transit love, inspire people to drive less and be more cautious when they do, that these are healthy choices, that there are two major transit hubs that people need to be able to get to/from... etc!! Mechanic classes

Hi everyone! I'm new to this community so hopefully I'm doing this right. For a couple of months now I have been working as the operation manager of a non-profit community bike shop in Eastern Canada, and I was hoping to get some inspiration and ideas for putting up mechanic classes. I would be looking for any insights or examples of classes that you gave at your shops. I'm mostly wondering about the curriculum itself, like the "level" of the curriculum. Should I make a complete mechanic class that could almost get you a job (I have the training for it), or should I just keep it to the essentials? And what should I charge, if anything? Last thing, I'm curious what's your experience teaching kids under, say 15 or 16? Is it worth it or are they usually not interested enough? Boards need to exist to felicitate the organization, not to be vehicles for a bullet point on someone's resume. The legal fiction is so that coöperatives can run unmanaged by others, particularly the government, outside of providing a framework of rights and legitimate responsibilities. As such, boards should be both organically formed from within and by the organization, while seeking out to strengthen the organization in its structure and goals by adding any necessary elements. Maintaining both a sense of empowerment and agency, for each individual within the organization as well as for the organization is a key factor. Being self-strong, while reaching out to increase strength within the community and of the community is integral. Don't go down the path of a board with an agenda that doesn't fit with what the organization needs in order to thrive on a daily basis - and more broadly, accomplish its mission. It's one thing to have stakeholders on the board *in addition* to former staff or experts; it's completely another to seat people who simply want to have some measure of leverage or influence for their own reasons. The purpose of a board, from the federal government's perspective, is so that the government may retain a reliable point of contact through any potiential changes or adversity. It's s huge deal to the feds to remove the requirement to pay taxes, and they don't want to grant that status without assurance that the entity will remain responsive and responsible from a federal standpoint. What this means is that there is no requirement for the board to do any particular thing other than exist and be prepared to liase with the feds should they require it. The board can be a board of directors, who exert vision and authority, or it can simply be a board of advisors, assisting those who already run the organization. Really it can be a board of [anything]. It just has to fulfill the few barebones duties demanded by nonprofit specifications. So be careful how you choose them and appoint them. Do set out very carefully right away who gets to choose them; one of the worst configurations, because nepotism and incest, is the current board voting on the new board members. Any good idea might be protected in this way long-term (which is why a lot of organizations cling to this method), but it can also mean bad ideas have the ability infect a board for generations, even outliving the tenure of the members who originally set them in motion. Probably better to identify stakeholder groups (whom are served or targeted by the organization) and operational groups (staff, volunteers, other support personnel), and extend the right (or requirement) to vote to them. As for accountability, elections play a part in that - not only the initial elections themselves, but the frequency of them. Austin's Yellow Bike Project is going through a governance transition. We used to be a fairly horizontally organized consensus-run collective of volunteers who did the day-to-day of what happens at the shop, and our size wasn't limited. We are becoming an exclusive board of probably 6-9 people. Some of us are still running shops, but about half are not. We're currently trying to work out (among many other things) how board members are (s)elected and to whom the board is accountable. Or more concretely, how the board is held accountable. We don't have "members," so the questions of "who gets to vote" is among the ones we're trying to answer. If you have thoughts or if your org went through something like this I'm interested to hear about it. In particular what best practices and pitfalls you encountered. The board also has appetite for working through this with a professional. Some of us are less psyched about people who don't have experience with groups that have our consensus- / volunteer-run d.i.y. culture, horizontal organizing history, etc. Many of them have experience only with the more traditional non-profit board model and struggle to wrap their heads around how we used to operate and why. Profits for what? Many have Paid staff, so I guess that's where the Profits could go. Our's, Bike New Britain does not. Doireann: Thank you for bringing up this topic. I had never heard of a Lone Working Policy. Evidently, employers are obligated to see to the safety of lone workers in the event of mishap such as a slip and fall, or an attack by hostile customers. After conducting a few web searches, I gather that these policies are more widely used in the UK and Canada than in the US, where our Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has no Lone Working policy requirement. If it helps at all, a web search turned up this template for Lone Working Policy from the UK. This one doesn't seem very helpful, but still better than nothing. I expect that a determined searcher will find that many other examples are available online. https://positivelyuk.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Sample-Lone-Worker-Poli… In addition, I found some commercial web sites that furnish sample Lone Working Policy templates by email, in exchange for your contact information. Undoubtedly a sales person will be contacting me shortly. :-) Although my non-profit shop does not have an official Lone Working Policy, this may be due to only having two paid employees working with many volunteers. Unofficially, the shop policy seems to be, "Don't work alone." In the past, when my shop has needed advice for issues like this, we have been able to turn to another local non-profit organization that provides free legal support and sample language. I hope that you too have such a resource that can provide assistance tailored to your particular country's requirements. When you complete your own Lone Working Policy, please post a copy so the rest of us can see it. Free Standing Bike Rack for 19 Bikes

I recently designed and built an inexpensive free standing bike rack suitable for shop use. It holds 19 bikes vertically from hooks, with alternating bikes pointing up and down, and with handlebars facing out. My goals were to: - store lots of bikes using minimal floor space, in a place where floor/wall hooks are not allowed - easily be able to get to any bike - easy to build - low cost Now I would like to share this design. looking for current info on orgs that move/donate surplus bikes

Hi all, Back in the day at RIBs we used to periodically ship excess bikes we had to Ghana. I don't remember anymore what the entity that did the shipping and organization for that was, only that last time I checked five or so years ago, they had long since ceased operation. I even contacted one of the organizers directly and they had no connections to share or interest in resurrecting their past project. It was a total dead end, and I never had the extra bandwidth to create a new effort on my own or deepen/broaden my search. So what I'm hoping to hear from people is whether they know of, and have contact info for, any current entities doing this kind of work. Loading up shipping containers or tractor trailers with bikes and shipping them off to places in the world with both a shortage *and* a capacity to fix them. One thing I heard from people when I was doing the rounds last time was that some of the entities that took the bikes either sold them for scrap, or dumped them off without knowing what was done with them after delivery, which ultimately turned out to be to sell them for scrap. The obvious worst case scenario for such an effort. So I'm also hoping to hear about any vetting that has been done, or firsthand experience with the downstream of such a project. Since we do not have a showroom and don’t fit the norm for a bike shop, it is difficult. Any suggestions. One of the wholesalers is asking for a occupational license for sale or repair of bicycles. New York State bike survey - let’s get some convo on equity going!

Hi Folks, Please see below for important info on an effort going on here in NY. Apologies for the forward, but this is the best way to get the right information out there. The guy leading this effort is a long-time supporter of community bike shops and a lifelong bike advocate. So let’s see if we can help get some diverse voices to answer their survey. Best, Matt V Utica Bike Rescue I am writing to ask that you please share the FIRST EVER comprehensive "New York State Bicycling Census" - funded by NYSERDA - with your agency's extensive network of contacts across upstate*.* (*The survey, linked here <https://nyserda.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_aaOKnyxZSgkskmi>, will be open for several months.*) The purpose of this survey is to help determine who is biking across New York, why they are riding a bike (e.g., health and wellness, daily transportation, reduce an individual's carbon footprint), in what context (urban, ex-urban, rural, on and off road - from small towns to large cities!) and whether or not connecting to mass transit is part of an individual's bike equation. *All participants will be entered to win one of three $150 Planet bike gift cards being offered - and no email addresses or other personal information will be shared or saved. * With a robust dataset, and we have already received 1500 responses in a week since soft launching this effort, we can help decision makers, elected officials and an engaged public to implement policies and programs to accelerate more and safer cycling policies and funding. *HOWEVER*, *there is a strong equity component to this survey effort that I believe your organization can help us address*. Hello Group, The Bike Works in Silver City, NM is reaching out to the network of amazing folks out there to broadcast that we are looking for additional staff in our shop. We operate a unique shop that is part 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit and part full-service retail shop. We have recently moved to a new shop space right in the heart of Historic Downtown Silver City right across from the local Food Co-op. Silver City, New Mexico is a community of 10,000 situated on the Continental Divide in SW New Mexico. Our town sits at 6000’ and is tucked at the southern edge of the 3.3 million acre Gila National Forest and 500k acre Gila Wilderness with hot springs, sub-alpine forests and vast desert within close reach. We are at the crossroads of Adventure Cycling’s Great Divide Mountain Bike Route and the Southern Tier. We also host the 5 day Tour of the Gila stage road race. When the new president started talking about Build Back Better my thoughts went to bike lanes, education, safety infrastructure, etc. Not too sure if or when any of that will occur. Earn A Bike Programs

Hi Y'all, At The Pedal Factory in Salisbury, NC, we developed a worksheet for Earn-A-Bike folks to work through (attached). The worksheet guides them through our shop mission, basic bike maintenance skills, how to select a bike, learning the parts of the bike and common tools, as well as safe riding techniques. They also complete 3 volunteer tasks around the shop, as their sweat equity contribution. Depending on the need for that day, it could be cleaning up, sorting parts, unloading the trailer, moving bikes, or whatever special task might need to be done. They also breakdown one bike, usually a junker, to get salvageable parts for our used parts inventory, and to introduce them to turning wrenches. It's much easier to have people take bikes apart than to try and teach each of them the ins and outs of fixing up whole bikes. We have volunteers prepare bikes that are potential earn-a-bikes, usually department store bikes that we value around $100. More expensive bikes can be earned, but the participant must volunteer additional hours/tasks to make up the difference, or pay the difference. The volunteers get the bikes to 90-95% ready to go, so that we can check over the bike with the Earn-A-Bike participant and fix a thing or two and get them on their way. Once the worksheet is completed, the participant earns their chosen bike, a helmet, lights and a lock. We take each person on a safety ride to insure safe riding techniques and to answer additional questions. Folks must sign up for Earn-A-Bikes and we have two slots each open shop day for Earn-A-Bikes. About 60% of people actually come back for their allotted time. Having folks sign up helps us to manage our time, as well as reducing the amount of folks that just want to walk in and get a free bike. We tell folks that it takes 6-8 hours to complete (2 shop days), but some folks are really proficient and can finish it in 4 hours or so. Before this, we had a set amount of volunteer hours that must be completed to earn a bike. We decided to switch to the worksheet to keep folks focused on what they needed to accomplish, increasing most folks' ability to work independently. We also created some reference materials that contain the answers to the worksheets, so folks have a nice laminated guide to go by. When we had an hour based system, a lot of staff and volunteer time was spent trying to get people focused on productive things instead of just waiting to get the hours. We have a similar program for youth, with a similar worksheet that they work through. We don't require youth to complete volunteer tasks or breakdown bikes, but some participate in these ways voluntarily. In 2021, 88 people completed earn-a-bikes. If it's helpful....here's how our gift economy model has evolved * Idea #1 [there was no external support or funding at this stage - just me running an experiment on my weekends] o This was literally a large mason jar where people could donate after having received a bike service or a lesson in bike maintenance (originally, there were four courses; intro, basic, intermediate, advanced) o I didn't differentiate between parts (many new) or labour o Results + Takings after 8months (weekends only) came to around £2000, once parts were factored in, this more than halved + Only those well versed with cycling (and some mechanical knowledge) knew the value of servicing. The perceived value of maintenance training varied even more widely + Some people HATED the donation jar and idea of 'pay what you feel', some loved it. Most people who hated it appeared time poor and cash rich [I felt they wanted a simple transaction] * Idea #2 [now with some funding] o parts had to be paid for, even used parts [these have been fully cleaned, inspected, lubed/etc and where necessary - fitted, test ridden and removed - i.e not just a box of random parts that have been stripped and left] o there was now a bank account [people were given details and left to pay as and when they felt like it and how much they felt] o Results + A glass jar gave pressure for people for give then and there, also some people don't use cash (others only use cash) - for those who use cash, this has and will always be acceptable too + I refused to ask people to tick boxes on what disability they had or what ethnic group or sexual orientation or age they were...for same reasons previously given + Gifting roughly doubled * Idea #3 [how it's been running for the last couple years] o We have a 'value list' for servicing and training clearly laid out on the door of the workshop and (less clearly!) on the website o People pay what and when they feel called to. There are no demands for payment. If people ask why we operate this way, I explain about 'gift economics' and sharing economies (the workshop is adjacent to some of the most expensive bits of real estate in London - yet also within 15minutes walk of some of the poorest with 2nd highest rate of homelessness and child deprivation in the whole country) o If people haven't gifted anything and said they would, I will sometimes send them an email or call a few weeks later. Sometimes they've forgotten, sometimes they just won't want to gift anything...in almost five years of trading, a only a few people have done this. We're known as the highest quality bike servicing enterprise in the area (we've serviced bikes for Olympic Medal winners) and our training is also second to none o We also have Paypal (linked to our account) and Coupay. We are considering adding a crypto account for Etherium and Bitcoin when the business scales up o Results + From servicing, _we take roughly 85-90% of what a 'normal' workshop would make_. Wow! Very insightful replies so far and cause for me to pause and think about how our "everyone that puts something into the collective, gets something out of it" vibe is preventing us from helping people. Scott, you're absolutely right. Third party vetting certainly takes a lot of skilled work off our shoulders. A hybrid of volunteering, third-party vetting, and even accepting community work done elsewhere will likely be where we land. Nicholas, I'm curious about the pay-what-you-want model and wonder how it would go over in our shop. We're a bike flipper's mecca and these items are often used as currency among our unhoused patrons - especially right now with COVID and folks being unhoused as a result of some major rent hikes. Is it abused much that you know? Are there limits to the level of componentry? Is it this way for bikes, too? Thanks again for the thorough and thoughtful response. Carlyn, do you usually have enough work trade for someone to earn a bike in a reasonable amount of time? Do folks come back and complete their hours most of the time? The last iteration of ours required an individual to volunteer 12 hours of time in exchange for a bike we'd teach them to fix up, a set of lights, and a lock. These folks are already facing transportation issues and have difficulty returning to the shop to complete the hours they started. Separate from earn-a-bike we offer work trade at a rate of $10/hour for shop credit that can be used for stand time or regular-priced parts needed to fix one's bike. If your shop has an earn-a-bike program or similar, how does it work? And is utilization of the program high? Any input, documentation, etc. is appreciated! Hey bike people around the world! My former bike collective is looking for a part time "co-operator" to help bring some life into the shop. The Cabrillo Bike Co-op is an on-campus, student run bike collective project at Cabrillo College in Aptos (Near Santa Cruz and very close to paradise <https://go.boarddocs.com/ca/cabrillo/Board.nsf/files/WELCOME_IMAGE/$file/Ca…>!). In order to be hired as a paid employee, you will need to be enrolled at Cabrillo in at least 6 units. However, picking a facilitator will take a few minutes away from the group.
