Critical Mass book essays?

Hi all, It's late, but we're doing a book to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Critical Mass starting in San Francisco. We will also be hosting a big week-long celebration with daily rides, evening art shows, concerts, films, etc., from Monday Sept. 24-Sunday Sept. 30, with the big anniversary ride falling on Friday, Sept. 28... everyone is invited of course! So the book's original deadline was Jan. 15, and I regret that I never directly sent the solicitation to this list, but we've extended the deadline to Feb. 7 (and we could go a bit longer if someone here needs more time and is up for contributing)... Why is Bike! Bike! Scheduled for June????

So I just checked the Bike! Bike! website and I see that this years event is scheduled for June 21-24. Why? This is literally the peak of the season and makes it impossible for us to attend. We've been to 3 Bike! Bike!'s in the past and they were some of the most magical, inspiring events for our group; invaluable. It's a shame that we will again not be able to attend this year. wheel storage hooks

Our free, plentiful favorite for storing wheels is the long arm of a side pull brake. It has a hole for a big headed nail or screw. You can use a washer to keep nail/screw from pulling through. This hook is strong and can hold one wheel, or two thinner rimmed wheels. With the arm twist, you have to pay attention to the direction orientation, and sometimes we modify the twist, using a vice. With the slight lip at the top of the arm, it is best to afix this type of hook on the edge of a wood beam, although the arms/hooks work just fine on a blank, flat wall too. A few pix down on linked page you can see some in action. They are on one of our wheel tripods, which we have modified since the picture. http://strans.org/communityshop.html We also have a few hundred wheels on a tall wall in our ped tech warehouse- in that case we used 20d nails I think, and nailed at an angle into the studs. Chuck, A couple years ago, the Fort Collins Bike Co-op<http://fcbikecoop.org/programs/earnabike.php>started requiring EAB (earn-a-bike) volunteer time to be completed at an external non-profit organization instead of in our shop. This has turned out to be a great decision as it requires less supervision from our volunteers and provides hundreds of volunteer hours to the community each year. We haven't pursued any educational component, but have considered requiring recipients to watch a 30 minute bike safety video. This would cover problem topics in our community like riding on the right side of the street, using lights and other basics. This model does eliminate the ability for recipients to learn about basic bike mechanics before they receive their bike. fundraising bike trips

My name is Rick McFerrin. I am the founder of a charity called TWO WHEEL VIEW. We use the bike as a tool to educate youth on the environment and culture of north America and abroad through bicycle education and expedition programs (www.twowheelview.org). For the past 7 years we have been raising money for TWO WHEEL VIEW youth programs by taking adults on a bike trip in Argentina. Kind of like a Ride for the Cure but this is a 2-week trip with the focus on raising money to support students - from where we live - so that they can participate on TWV student bicycle expeditions. Everyone pays their own way and pledges to raise some money for the charity. Each year we usually get 8 to 11 adults to participate on the ride. This year there are only 5 signed up so far and the trip is in March. We may be exhausting our local reach and need to get the word out to a broader audience. Does anyone have any suggestions for reaching out to a broader community of supporters for events like this. Last year we raised more than $20,000 with 11 adults participating. When it works, it's great for funding students who would not otherwise have the opportunity for summer trips. Thanks for ideas. My name is Enzo, I'm the board secretary from The Bikerowave in Los Angeles (www.bikerowave.org). We have decided to host bici bici 2012 here in Los Angeles. The current plan is to have this take place on April 13-15th. The 15th will also be CicLAvia here in Los Angeles. We are still in the early stages of planning this but we anticipate a lot of help from the many other bike Co-ops in LA. I hope to see many of you folks from around the west coast down here so we can share our experiences and discuss ways to make it so we do what we do better than before. Here in Jackson, MI, we've developed a good relationship with a local auto shop. They throw our old tires with their old tires for no charge. I estimate recycling a couple hundred per year. Goodness from the list

In early November, Paul Slater of BicycleXchange in Jupiter FL posted to this list that he'd been contacted by someone about donated bikes to be picked up in Sanibel, a mostly retirement enclave 2 hours south of Tampa Bay. After a couple of rounds of emails between me, Paul and the family of the deceased "Bike Man" of Sanibel, some friends and I rented a U-Haul this past weekend and went down to extract the bikes from a mobile home attic. In the (no more than 18")space between the ceiling and aluminum roof of a singlewide mobile, the Bike Man had stored nearly 50 disassembled bikes. Vintage Raleigh, Puch, Peugot and Panasonic, Schwinn Ross frames, hundreds of wheels and even some Mongoose Motomags. Boxes and boxes of chainrings, tubes, even a box full of shiny bright vintage chrome bells. A folding Raleigh, a 1960s tandem, road, mountain and cruiser bikes, so much for a new bike nonprofit to get started with that we're agog at the new possibilities. tire recycling

Here in Ontario there is a tire recycling program: https://www.ontariots.ca/sp/index.html But they won't take bike tires. For the past five years we've been paying $1 per tire to have our dead ones properly recycled. All of the regular retail shops aside from MEC just throw theirs out (to the best of my knowledge). I'd really like the OTS to include bike tires, and our shop is willing to be a drop- off point. I've written to my MPP but no action from him as of yet (only an acknowledgment by his staff that my email was received). Then I was informed that the BC program is now taking bike tires. http://www.tirestewardshipbc.ca/bike.php Is there anyone on this list with info as to how they got this happening? REALLY Cleaning Chains

Hi everybody, We've been getting really into upcycling bike parts here at Bike Recycle Vermont -- we sell jewelry and fun products at local artists' markets to raise money for the shop. We love making jewelry with the ever-iconic bike chain, but getting it clean is so time and labor intensive. *Has anyone found an effective way to clean multiple chains at once, and I mean reallyclean them out, get them grease-free and bone dry to the point that you'd wear the thing around your neck? * We tried a parts cleaner, we tried bringing them to a car wash... each time we still ended up going at each chain with a tooth brush and some degreaser and spending 15 minutes scrubbing it. Wet Winter Bikes

Hi All, The Peterborough Community Bike Shop recently moved out of a church basement and into a beautiful space in a historic downtown building. For the first time we find ourselves concerned about the floors! In the summer we have carpet down, but as the wet winter bikes roll in, I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for dealing with the ice and snow melt... Boot mats? Cardboard? Layers of carpet? Custom built trays? What do you use to catch the water with as fenders and frames de-ice in your shop? Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Re-purposing parts

Manufacturers throw out, literally, tons of usable and un-usable bike parts that are considered obsolete or blemished. Since they have distributors / shops that buy and sell those parts, it makes little business sense to give them to a non-profit and potentially risk them being re-sold, warrantied a second time, or something else that might upset a paying distributor / shop. The question is, is there much risk if the parts are re-purposed (think Resource Revival) into things like Art. Attendance Tracking

Hi all, What are you all doing to track attendance at your programs? Currently each kid that walks through our door is assigned their own sign-in sheet and is asked to sign-in each day that they come in (see attached sign-in sheet). This past year or so it has been an ongoing challenge to get kids to sign-in each day. We have tried to explain the importance of the data, but often times kids simply forget! What are you all doing to more accurately track the kids that access your programs on a daily, monthly, yearly basis? I have been researching different online solutions or "cooler" ways to sign-in, but all options are way too pricy! Your ideas would certainly be a huge help!!!! Hello, This is Paul Slater, of the BicycleXchange (BXC). I received an email from someone whom wishes to donate approx 150 bikes some disassembled and mostly maintained. The bikeb are located on Sanibel Island (West Coast of Florida) coming out of storage units. I was wondering if there is a collective not yet added to the directory that may want the donation. We are just out of reach to get them however it could be rewarding because it is such an affluent area. It seems the public is using the current directory for contacts. Hey folks, it's probably not a new idea but especially with upcoming information about Bike!Bike! I've been toying with the idea of starting a no-reply mailing list. There's a lot of logistics that we'd have to get worked out and it's something that I scarcely have time to administer but I wanted to get a general room temperature on this. One idea that I had that might help us smooth out some other issues as well was to replace the content on bikecollectives.org with a sign up form for bike collectives (not touching the wiki of course). Bike collectives would sign up as an organization giving their general email address and location and possibly a few other details. We could talk about having a few administrators that could send out notices, likely at most one a month although probably much more rarely than that and in addition we could use the information to know more about our community at large. This would also open up the possibility of putting bikecollectives.org to better use. My main concern is that, due to the nature of the think tank (long discussions, off-topic discussions, in-fighting) we are keeping many organizations in the dark about information that we would like them to know about. Hi Everyone, My name is Shah Mohamed. Some of you know me by some other child hood name or nick name. We have all met and hung-out, spent time together sharing an experience or two and in the larger context, shared life. I have great respect and admiration for you all. We all have unique gifts and talents and I hope that every one of you is engaging your talents and gifts living life close to its limits. I do work that is rewarding and meaningful to me and from what I can tell is very meaningful to the people I touch. A place where people can gather and explore the ideas and practices of what it means to live more sustainably. I guess it doesn't normally happen in North America, so if you can make it this year, it might be the last year it's here for a while. i figured some of you might be interested in this, or would know people who are. be safe! josh. Hi Jonathan, Carolyn forwarded this over to me, since she thought this sounded like a membership question. It's been a while since you and I have connected-hope you are doing well. The Advocacy Advance Program was created to draw down federal funding to be spent on biking and walking, so it would be crucial to ensure that an application addresses drawing down federal funding. Any Alliance and League member is welcomed to apply for such funding. With the increasing number of community bike shops (or like organizations) playing an advocacy role in their community, there is definite potential in this area. I don't personally handle the Advocacy Advance Program and Grants, but I have copied Brighid O'Keane, our Advocacy Advance Program Manager, on this email so that you and her can connect to discuss further. I would also like to add that the Alliance for Biking & Walking, in response to member requests from community bikeshops and like organizations, is also investigating other opportunities of better ways to serve such organizations.
