Hi all, Thanks to the guy who answered the phone at the Community Bike Project in Omaha, I found this list which I hope will be helpful in preparing a report that will hopefully lead to funding a major investment in community bike shops in California. I need to include in my report a decent budget estimate for opening and operating a shop, and for the number of bikes that we can reasonably expect to recycle through the shop through earn-a-bike programs and direct sales of donated used bikes. I asked this question on the bike-equity network list and got a couple good responses that I’d like to add to before preparing my final report. Allen, At Columbus Bike Co-op we have Shop Monitors as well as a full-time staff person (he is paid hourly, and is very underpaid for his experience. We are lucky to have him, and are working on our fundraising so we can pay him more). Shop Monitors help folks fix their bikes and open/close the shop as needed. We also have a Shop Monitor Training Program; this ensures that the Monitors know what they're doing and also draws in more people to volunteer who have an interest in fixing bikes but are not as skilled yet. Our shop is open 2-3 days a week for 3 hours at a time. We are hoping to add another day during the summer that will be staffed with newly trained volunteers. We have an operations committee that handles issues that arise. It meets quarterly. If you are interested, I can connect you with our shop manager. He would be glad to shed some light on more of our operations. All:We are tossing around ideas of how to grow our shop manager roster. For the last 5 years, we have operated Broke Spoke with a Board of Directors, most of whom do mission oriented work but are not involved in the day to day activities of the shop, and a Steering Committee. Our current shop managers are made up from our Steering Committee, all long time volunteers who have agreed to work X number of hours / month and be in charge of opening and closing the shop as a shop manager a minimum of once a month. Currently, the Steering Committee has 4 members and this works well for handling shop related issues / procedures during our monthly steering committee meeting. We currently have 8 people who make up our Committed Volunteers. These folks work a minimum of two shifts / month in exchange for 24 hour access to the shop. We are looking at expanding the number of days we are open but need additional shop managers. We would like to expand our shop manager numbers from our Committed Volunteer roster but not add the extra burden of the monthly meeting to those folks. Bike storage

The initial amount of bikes is 50 and we have around 15 meters to storage at least half of them. Hello everyone! Are you ready for Bike!Bike! in Detroit this Fall? Well, I'm ready also, however I'm doing a fundraiser ride from Vancouver, BC Canada to Tijuana, Mexico, I will be leaving during the 3rd week of August 2016 and will not return until late October. The purpose of this fundraiser ride is to provide biking programs for youth in disadvantaged areas within Chicago. The fundraiser will provide funding for them to sustain and/or start their youth based biking programs. The youth of need activities to hep prevent them from getting into trouble or worse. Being involved in a biking program helps them learn discipline, develop thinking skills, problem solving and in some cases business skills. Youths involved in biking can experience different communities and open the world to their dreams and desires. Bicycling develops discipline while learning bicycle safety, the youth acquire their thinking skills when they're learning how the components of a bicycle works, problem solving skills evolve when the youth learn how to repair a faulty bicycle component, and the business skills develop when they learn how to manage a bicycle shop. Biking can help teach youth to make better life choices. Discounts/donations for accessories

Hey everyone, We're involved in a couple programs that provide free/by donation bikes to folks that wouldn't otherwise have access and have recently identified a real need for accessories (particularly locks, but also helmets and lights). Has anyone had any success getting discounted or donated accessories from distributors, commercial shops (i.e. deadstock) or through fundraisers or bike drives? Hello, I'm writing from Bikes del Pueblo in San Diego. We've been a volunteer run pop-up / mobile bike kitchen for many years with no public storefront. California Bike Coalition has approached us with the possibility of support for finally getting that space. In preparing for our meeting with them, I wanted an idea of what it cost for similar projects to get started. Can folks who have the numbers shoot me a message with how much it cost to get their spaces set up (including insurance) as well as how much it took to operate the space in the first few years? What were the primary components of your budget? These examples would help me paint a picture of what we could create in San Diego. We have been operating on a very small scale, limited storage space, and volunteer staff so it is hard to estimate how "big" we could be if we had support to make this leap. Hello from Oxford, UK! We finalised our Safer Spaces Policy (attached) at the end of last year and display it on the wall in our workshop, asking every workshop user to agree to it upon signing in. The process for its creation involved as many of our workshop volunteers as could attend (I think there were 10-15 in total) along with a few of our workshop mechanics/tutors. The finished document is just one sheet of paper. We do have complaints procedures and the like but wanted our safer spaces policy to be quick & easy to take on board, hence the simple structure and brief wording. Hope it’s useful. Ride on! Hi all - I wanted to share this with everyone - Cycles for Change is excited to offer at least five $325 scholarships (plus free registration) for youth aged 14-22 from out-of-state to visit St. Paul, MN for the 2016 Youth Bike Summit, which will be held May 27-29! While we understand this might not cover the full amount of travel and lodging costs, it should provide significant support for people wishing to come to the YBS. Friends, We have always had a maximally inclusive approach for anyone who wants to volunteer, and have recently opened up public shop-use to walk-ins (after eliminating membership as too exclusive and cumbersome). Hey folks! This is a friend of mine from my days in Victoria. If you're interested in talking to a researcher about experiences as a woman, trans* or queer mechanic, this is a cool opportunity. ----- Hi, My name is Courtenay Nielsen and I am a fourth-year undergraduate student in the Department of Gender Studies at the University of Victoria. I am also a woman and a bike mechanic; I work and volunteer in two community bikes shops in Victoria. I am conducting research for my graduating project which seeks to explore the experiences of women/trans/non-binary bike mechanics working/volunteering in community bike shops in various locations across Canada. I would like to invite anybody who identifies as a woman/trans/non-binary bike mechanic who is at least 19 years of age to participate in my study. In a nutshell, I would like to ask said mechanics about their experiences navigating bike shops, about the reception they have received from customers and co-workers, whether their bike shop hosts women and trans exclusive hours, and what they notice about the demographics of the shop (who are the customers? Who works there?). Drawing on multiple, varied perspectives, I hope to identify barriers to full participation in this field and to illuminate the creative strategies already being employed by those currently participating in it. Participation in this study will include an audio-recorded interview via skype or telephone with me at a date/time that is most convenient for the participant. I anticipate that the interview will last between 30 and 60 minutes. With the interviews I collect, I will be producing a radio documentary which is to be broadcasted via Uvic’s on-campus radio station, CFUV. If the participant so chooses, I will protect their anonymity through the use of a pseudonym and the removal of all identifying information. Or, if they do not want their voice on the radio, I am happy to read aloud the parts of their interview to be included in the documentary. Instruction for Marginalized Communities: Women on Wheels and Multilingual Nights

Oh HEYYYY again... It's a double email kinda day. 1) Multilingual Nights We're hosting our first ever multilingual nights YAYYYYY! We now have a posse of rad mechanics who are fluent in English, Spanish, French, Cantonese, and Mandarin and we are planning to hold a series of multilingual instruction nights. We're about to have our first sub-committee meeting about how we're going to go about the planning of these nights (ie: Do we have a strictly Spanish night, or a Spanish & French night? What is the role of Anglo mechanics in these nights? What are the underlying needs of these communities beyond language instruction?), but first I wanted to find out if any of you have feedback or resource materials about your own experiences hosting multilingual nights. What did you set out to do? Did it work? What did you learn? 2) Women on Wheels We're in the process of reconsidering the reach and name of our women's night, Women on Wheels. This name has been revisited several times by our collective, and again we're feeling the need for change. Those of you who commit energy to thinking about providing services across the gender/sexuality spectrum...I'm looking for your input. The key challenges for us, (and maybe all of us?) I think, are two-fold: First, it's about holding space for those who adhere to identity politics (tangible and named - Woman, Lesbian, Dyke, sometimes Transwoman etc) while also holding space for folks who exist all along the gender and sexuality spectrum (intangible and variably named - Queer, Tomboi, sometimes Transwoman, Genderqueer, etc ). As in, how do we hold safer space for butch grandmas and trans women and gender queer folks all at once? Is it feasible or possible to hold safer space strictly around gender variance? Or is it presumptuous as fuck to try to lump these diverse communities together? Or reductionist to assume gender experience is the key connecting factor between these individuals (and not race, or class, or ....)? Second, it's about negotiating the instances of inclusion and exclusion that emerge as a result of differing levels of awareness and knowledge around these varied philosophies and ways of identifying. This is the crux of why we've called it Women's Night for so long. While in practice our "women's night" is attended by trans-women, cis-women, femmes, masculine-identified genderqueers, tombois, etc etc, we have continued to call it women's night to make sure that people who aren't familiar with the world of post-modern gender identity know they are welcome, and cis-men know easily and clearly that it is not for them. I guess, to make it legible to mainstream communities, while still welcoming to non-mainstream communities. Meanwhile, we've also had interest from femme-identified cis-men and trans men in having services for masculine-presenting folks or folks who are presumed masculine (which again, is on a really broad spectrum). We're in convo with folks about their needs and wants, but it would also be great to have input from other shops. Where I'm really seeking is input about how your shops are drawing the lines around participation in nights for marginalized communities (including communities bonded around race, ethnicity, ability, etc) and/or how to meld diverse communities in appropriate and supportive ways. I know that Plan B has Ladies, Trans, and Sissies Night, and BICAS has Women, Trans, and Femme night. Where are folks at with their organizing process around this? What are other shops doing? Volunteer and Membership Tracking iPhone App

Hey all, I finally finished my Sign In app! It's been a dream of mine ever since learning software to build something custom for bike collectives. With this app, you can track the hours of shop use for a volunteer, member, staff, or "custom" users. You can also assign people memberships, and see when they expire. You can send yourself all your data as a CSV. This differs from a google form isn that you can sign people out, easily edit contacts, and see at a glance how people have been using the shop. Some what unfortunately, the language I learned is specific to iPhones or iPads. So this app can not be used by all. My next adventure is to learn android, so hopefully, we'll have an android version some day! (If you know how to build android apps, and you want to work together on this, let me know!) That being said, please use the app I built if you can. Sarah, At Reno Bike Project we offer a 9-week, 2 hour-long class on Thursdays to teach members the basics of bike repair. We use donated MTBs with rigid forks and braze ons for racks - good, sturdy commuters; and we try to select bikes either with caliper or V brakes only. When the class/bikes are finished. they are set aside for our create-a-commuter program. We hit one component or component group a week in this order: Week 1 – Bike Inspection, Strip Cables & Housing Week 2 – Wheels: Inspection, Hub Overhaul Week 3 – Wheels: Truing & Dishing Week 4 – Bottom Bracket & Headset Overhaul Week 5 – Makeup & Review Week 6 – Cables & Housing Week 7 – Brake Setup Week 8 – Shifter Setup & Chain Week 9 – Makeup & Review/End-of-Session Party After several curriculum edits, we think this order makes the most sense. We start each class with a brief discussion and demo of what we're working on (including going over variations on the component to give students a more broad introduction than just what style of BB/brake setup/etc. their class bike has), then get into the hands-on work, overseen by two instructors for a class of ~10. Having a small student-to-teacher ratio ensures that everyone gets the one on one attention they need to absorb the lesson and get their work for the night done. We entered a photo contest sponsored by our insurance company (which we found on this list). Our entry was taken at our internship training program at Dunbar High School in DC. unique funding opportunity for a bike project in california's central valley

hi, Think Tank, One of the jobs I do these days is helping run an initiative at Stanford University that is focused on helping folks achieve a better sense of belonging and personal well being. I've been putting a bug in my boss's ear for a while to do a project researching how cycling and being part of a community of cyclists helps individuals achieve positive mental health outcomes. We have a unique and highly time sensitive opportunity to request a very substantial amount of funding (ie over $100k) to track such outcomes in conjunction with a partner organization in California's Central Valley (specifically, El Dorado, Stanislaus, San Joaquin, Tuolomne, Merced, or Deb counties). The overwhelming majority of the funding would directly benefit the partner organization, and could potentially be directed to infrastructure building, distributing bikes or bike safety needs to youth, or staffing budget. Stanford would obviously keep a cut for admin costs, and there would be some cost to track the outcomes. "Tracking outcomes" in these sorts of models is fairly low-intensity -- like annual questionaries for participants. Greetings folks! I am currently teaching a 10-person beginners mechanic class. I am torn with how the sequence of information should progress. We have 4, 90-minute sessions total, spaced over the course of 1 month. I tried teaching it before using my mechanics books as guides- but the progression didn't make sense to the students and I seemed to lose them. We did frames-brakes system-wheel etc... Hi everyone, This is Carlyn from BICAS in Tucson, AZ. I have been trying to dig through old Think Tank threads to see about youth riding club curriculum, on-bike games, fun skills practice, etc, for younger youth--grades 2-4. Would y'all be willing to share and/or direct me to past threads where this has been discussed? We have a really dynamic partnership right now with a youth center and would like to keep building on our program there. Would be happy to swap ideas & lessons. =) Also, do any of you do any kind of training for adults working with youth? If so, I would LOVE to see it! Any kind of trainings about youth engagement, respecting/elevating youth voices, recognizing & combating ageism, mentoring skills/expectations, making space for youth choices/leadership, etc. Thanks in advance!
