Impact of Co-ops on Commercial Bike Shops

I'm in the process of starting a bike co-op in the Rockville, MD area. Once we are established, I want to go and talk to the managers of the commercial bike shops in the area. Since I can foresee some potential antagonism based on the perception that the co-op will compete with them for repair business, I want to go armed with information. Does anyone know of any studies that show the economic impact of bike co-ops on the commercial shops in the same area? Along the same lines, does anyone have personal experience on the reaction of commercial shops to the start up of a co-op in "their" area? The more specific you can be in the responses, the better, though I can understand if you don't want to throw someone under the bus. Any information would be helpful. We're still a few months away from actually needing this information, but I'd like to be prepared. This distribution list is fantastic. I'm new to bicycle cooperatives but I'm enthusiastic to continue learning more so I'm thrilled to have a resource like this. I'm vacationing in Manatee, FL. My girlfriends family asked for my help fixing all of their bikes and I don't have my tools and the closest bike coop is in St. Petersburg, so it got me wondering if anyone's considered a virtual tool sharing library for bicycle tools. It could be a great resource for towns which a brick & mortar bicycle coop isn't yet self sustainable. If I lived in a small town, I'd for sure host one. Perhaps it could be a mobile application? Liability Waiver?

Hello folks across the pond! Recently, our friends at the London Bike Kitchen had their first conflict with a customer. He came into the workshop with a fancy Cannondale CAAD10 with a press fit BB20 bottom bracket, and he verbally agreed to their Terms & Conditions. However, the student turned out to be quite difficult - not listening to instructions, questioning instructions, consulting the internet, etc. During the BB installation process, the instructor forgot to put in the shims before the bearings were pressed in, so they had to get knocked out. Somewhere along the line, the inside of the BB shell was damaged, and there is disagreement between the instructor and the student about what happened/whose fault it is, etc. Now the student is asking for £800 to replace his frame, which could be deadly for a small bike shop. Following this, we’re having a lot of discussion in the UK bike community about how to approach these difficult situations. Has anyone dealt with a problem like this before? Does anyone have an effective liability waiver that covers both the customer and the shop? City Bike Plans: Do Collectives Connect Community Voices to Planning?

Dear all, Some Alta Planning + Design consultants who are assisting the City of Columbus, OH on their bike plan update asked me for advice about their communication campaign, such as best practices for outreach. I brought up bike co-ops and told them about Bike! Bike! being held in Columbus this year. I'm wondering what role collectives organizers/volunteers can play or have played as connectors, getting community voices heard that wouldn't otherwise make it to the city level. Or do bike plans seem totally disconnected from co-op concerns? If there's interest in having some kind of community conversation about what role co-ops can play in connecting more people to bike planning, let me know and I'll put you in touch with the Alta folks. A velodrome is typically made of wood and has ramped corners to accommodate a racer’s high speed in sharp turns; they may be built as outdoor or indoor tracks. According to USA Cycling there are:29 velodromes in 22 states 29 cities with velodromes19,355 cities in the USA Detroit is one of the 19,326 cities WITHOUT a velodrome.Detroit is FORTUNATE because there is one velodrome - only 25 miles outside of the city Rochester Hills, MI. Because of the invisibility of the sport, BikeVON and the International Velodrome of Bloomer Park in Rochester Hills, Michigan provided a motivator of a stipend for the children. They will receive $270 for 6 weeks of training to “ride” a bike. Training is 3 days a week for 2 hours. All equipment and coaching is free. Since this is a little known spot, Wayne State University’s Kinesiology Department will conduct yearlong study on the sport. This is the information needed to apply for funding. Please before you suggested to ask for any services, I have asked, community organizations, major non-profits for kids in the health, wellness and fitness no one is giving for these assorted reasons: *remember the track in this area is 1 out of 29 in the USA. and no it is not portable* 1. From printing materials, paying people, travel expenses, web development etc. I am leaking money. I gave a fund raiser is March and did not make ANY money. In March, I went to a youth meeting an 26 kids signed up. I took just name and email address. Going in, I knew transportation was going to be any issue. School bus rental quotes were anywhere from $148 - $250 per trip and there are 18 trips in the program. For me to rent a van then there are bonding issues. When the contribution $$$ topped off, I was asking the parents to car pool and I would supply gas $$$. I started with 10 kids. By the March fund raiser there were 7 and by the first weekend in May two kids. During May we have try-outs we offered to give each child $10 to come for try-outs. If 3 kids from the same organization came they would receive $13. Parent / guardian had to come to sign liability waivers. For the first weekend on one came. Graduations and other things going on. For the second weekend 4 students signed up at one school and I was counting on another to contact me. The transportation company needs at least 10 days notice. These wonderful people were working on a 3 day turn around for me. I rented a school bus. On that Saturday no one came. The reason were busy schedules and parents could not come with the child. I second Ollin on that one, I was part of the Bicitekas team developing that manual so be sure that language and context were both checked several times before publishing it. I'd also like to mention that the manual is based on the traffic regulations and urban context of Mexico City so some things might change depending on the city that you live in, specially since Mexico and United States do not share the same road rules and classification. Used jersey/apparel value?

Hi all, We have a number of jerseys and other used cycling apparel items which we have received via donation and have available for sale in our showroom. Compared to bikes, parts, and accessories, the apparel sells much more slowly. Does anyone have a system they use for deciding prices on that sort of thing? We often consult and sell on eBay for things like vintage parts, but jerseys and apparel seem less predictable/consistent. Hey Lauren, I was thinking about your idea of documenting skills and progress of youth. I had worked on related ideas at a previous job, but never got to implement them. I really like the idea of having an analog to merit badges and ranks in the boy/girl scouts. It provides youth something tangible to mark their growth and offers a chance to celebrate achievements. Also, by having both individual 'badges' and class/ranks you can bundle skills. Say for example you wanted to move from a green wrench to a yellow wrench, you would have to not only get your 'badge' for brake and derailleur adjustments, but also a social component (Introducing yourself & others) and a general skills (computer related, inventory?). This could capitalize on bike programs as an opportunity to engage in broader education, particularly if you could find community partners willing to donate trainings. Bike! fundraiser dance party (!!!), I'm actually doing other for real work. Including the exploration of formats, documentation, and reporting for our youth volunteering and Earn-a-Bike programs. Here in British Columbia, high school students are required to complete something like 30 hours of work experience (ie free labour) to graduate, and we get a lot of youth completing this requirement at our shops. We also run pretty informal Earn-a-Bike programs for youth who are in unconventional education settings, accessing social services, in alternative programs, or can't access our in-school programming for any variety of reasons. Lots of these kids are really focused on getting a job, but we can rarely accommodate that. I'm in the process of creating a checklist/worksheet of mechanical and interpersonal skills acquired by youth as they volunteer in our spaces. The idea is that it would include gradients of skill, becoming increasingly more complex as time goes on. It would be used to guide their time in the shop, and also document what they've learned. It would be the youth's responsibility to fill the checklist out over time and have staff sign off on it, and when it's completed, we would write them a letter of recommendation to be used in applying for jobs, school, whateva. Youth Ride Club - insurance?

hey all, we run a weekly 'youthshop' - like open shop for 12-15 year olds one day a week. one of those days per month, we are taking the core youth volunteers and participants on a short ride (on and off street) - approx. 45 min to an hour.... we are calling it Youth Shop Ride Club we have waivers for youthshop, and separate permission forms for the ride. helmets and brakes will be required. bike and safety check will happen before the ride. we own our building and our insurance has liability coverage for in shop activities. any ideas on how to insure the ride portion economically? i have heard that you can get this kind of per participant insurance through the Boy Scouts, but am not sure, and just throwing this out to yall to see if anything comes back. this is aalso what LAB insurance would obviously cover, but since we have building insurance, we we have not gone that route, and as all-volunteer; all donation, our budget is tiny. will also be calling our insurance rep to check in. in the past we have just done permission slips and done rides with no problems,.... and no insurance. Hey everyone! I've been lurking on this listserve for a long time, and i'd like to thank you all for the quality conversation. I'm working with a group of people to start a bike shop in southwest Detroit. we are going through the incorporation process right now, and writing the operating agreement between the Shop (to be an LLC) and the parent (501c3) has been difficult. Does anyone have an example of an operating agreement for this type of relationship? I would love to have something to use as a guide, if for nothing else than to make sure we cover everything that needs to be covered in the operating agreement. Thanks! Positive helmet psa/campaign?

Hello Bikey Friends, A local healthcare organization just released a helmet PSA<http://www.multicare.org/home/helmetfacts>aimed at parents, highlighting the dangers of riding bikes - brain injuries, fatalities, collisions, and other scary stuff. I sent them an email expressing my concern that this PSA will deter parents and children from riding, and that this will actually decrease the safety of bicyclists, not to mention that bicycling is part of a healthy, active lifestyle, etc., etc., etc. Anyway, they were not very responsive to my message, and I would like to send them examples of effective helmet campaigns that highlight safe behavior and helmet use without talking about dying children. Hey all, sorry been away from the thread for a while. We use QBP and J&B at BICAS. They have both been great in terms of customer service over the years. We are open 7 hours a day, 6 days a week with a woman trans night on our "closed day". I can see that if you dont have regular hours that it may be a problem as the deliveries come whenever they come. I dont have exact numbers but we spend a couple thousand dollars every 2 months at one or the other. I really cant say that we have had any problems with either company and like I said they have been good to work with. I talked with some folks from QBP at interbike and they seem to be pretty receptive to the idea of community bike shops and pretty supportive to the shops in UT and MN ( where they are located). We only order the basics that are hard to find used and we dont undersell our LBS. By policy we do not do special orders for customers but send them to the LBS if they want product other than what we sell. We do special orders for staff but at this point not even for volunteers. It keeps it a good relationship with the LBS. Its unfortunate that some of you have been having difficulties with the distributors but on their end they are just trying to keep backyard mechanics from getting an account. My inclination is to put up a sign, along these lines. "Volunteers worked hard to make these tools available so you can keep rolling. Please leave them for the next cyclist. A thief will get what they want, but the hog rings will prevent casual pilfering and can be easily cut to replace the bottle. Good afternoon, All! I was just wondering if there are any collectives in the Kalamazoo, MI area. Specifically, any that have any programs dedicated to youth so that they are able to work on their own bikes. In regards to the recent thread on QBP, please be aware that your conversations here are open to the public at: http://lists.bikecollectives.org/pipermail/thethinktank-bikecollectives.org/. This is the way that the ThinkTank has been since the beginning in September 2006 but perhaps more conversation is needed about this if people are uneasy about that. There are few options as far as I can tell though, it seems that MailMan only allows public or private archives and the public archives (although generally underused as far as I can tell) are a great resource. Thoughts? Anyone more of an expert on MailMan and knows a better way we should set it up? .godwin

As a big supporter of community bike shops, I wanted to be sure this group got the invitation. I hope you'll come! It's my goal to get our all our biking and walking organizations to attend. Greetings, My colleague and I are charged with giving a brief presentation to a big cycling club about community bike projects in NYS this coming week. I am looking to make contact with as many representatives as possible, and mainly am looking for projects in addition to the ones listed below. Whats the context here? Well, the New York Bicycling Coalition has met with a few of us and is exploring how they can get involved in supporting the community bike project movement. I'm not here to be a QBP apologist, but I do personally appreciate that they are tightening up restrictions on third-party resellers. People buying cut-rate parts online doesn't do anything good for co-ops or independent local bike shops, so I see their perspective. I hope there is some compromise that can be reached, though, which restricts the flood of cheap parts to places like Amazon while also giving legitimate organizations access. My experience with QBP has been via a single location, independent, for-profit shop, a bicycle commuter parking/service station, and now at an established co-op with a commercial location, and while there are hoops to jump through no matter what, they've been accommodating in all of my situations, including setting up a second account at the commuter station to track and bill fleet repair parts separately. I put together a list of every wholesaler I could find in North America, who I personally called or emailed to inquire as to if they dealt with mobile repair services without a storefront location...which might fit into a similar category as a limited-hours co-op. I'll see if I can dig out those notes and share them with the list. We've had a J&B account here (before my time) and at the for-profit shop I worked at we used J&B quite a bit for entry-level refurb-type parts. Cheap stuff, basically.
