Hey all, It was absolutely awesome meeting the lot of you at Bike Bike in CDMX. If we didn't meet there and you're getting this email anyways, you've probably met me in person. If neither of these things are the case, congratulations, I found you somehow. I'm hitting yall up because we're gonna host Regional Bike Bike in Oakland CA but this is gonna be a group effort. Obviously everyone is strapped for time and money, so it's a pitch in where and how you can kinda thing; - Workshops! Greetings all, I'm writing a new book on bike commuting, and I'm looking for input. Have thoughts to share on the topic? I'd love to hear from you! Basic bike commuting advice is easy to find online, and we're lucky for it, yet the few recent books on the topic tend to be academic, or first-person accounts. So I'm hoping to broaden the aperture; to include a range of perspectives on this topic. The goal is to create an engaging and credible reference for readers who might not have immediate access to bike culture; for those who may be thinking about riding to work, but may not know anyone nearby to ask about it. This will be an invitation to join us! The approach here mirrors what I did with my last book, Riding More With Less: A Future for Bike Repair (see https://pmpress.org/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1543), which surveyed community bike shops to gather ideas on resourceful approaches to bike repair. Volunteer Retention

Hi All, In some but not all of our sessions we have an issue with volunteer retention. After surveying our volunteers and people who left after 3-4 sessions the consensus is that our 1 hour induction is not enough and that we need a more structured training and onboarding over multiple sessions for the cohort that for various reasons need more training and more interaction with staff and volunteers. Has anyone had any luck with increasing retention using a more structured approach. Hi Folks, Our new bike shop, Pigeon River Bikes, in Haywood County, North Carolina, is moving in to an old building that’s being renovated. The owners will install a new entry door for us, and it can be double doors or a single, wide door. I’m thinking one, big door will be a good choice. Bigger is better, up to the point where it’s hard to deal with. If you had your choice, would you prefer a 36”, 40” or other size door width? Thanks and good health, Weogo

Creating Self-Guided Volunteer Tasks

Hey everyone, Our collective (Davis Bike Collective) is struggling to implement a volunteer-for-credit system. One of the big questions is how to make it easier for volunteers to, well, volunteer. I think creating some more "self guided" volunteer tasks would help make everything run more smoothly by opening the door to more volunteers while increasing the effectiveness of their efforts. How do other collectives make it easy for volunteers to stay on task? What are some good "self-guided" tasks that wouldn't require lots of oversight from more experienced mechanics? Does anyone have any other tips regarding volunteer for credit i.e. what worked and what hasn't? Thanks in advance! Aaron

Outdoor bike wash

I’m Del Holland, a member of the board of the Bike Library in Iowa City, Iowa, https://icbikelibrary.org/ We are in a process of upgrading our outdoor space, currently concrete in a former warehouse. One amenity I would like to see added is an outdoor bike wash station. We now have a hose bib on the outside of the building. We would like something better. Have any of you got ideas or experience to guide our efforts? Topics we have thought about; Rain water collection as water source Pressure, either gravity or a power washer Bike hang/stand Parts wash Dirt/grit collection Drying area We’d love your insights on these and/or other things to help us design and build a functional and aesthetically pleasing (well maybe that is too much to wish for 😀) bike wash at the Bike Library. Well, I recently threw together some hand-written HTML and slapped it onto a free (and ad-less) webhost. This seemed great at first, regardless of the weird URL. But after lots of other publicity and potential traffic, I've seen it get hacked twice (by a radical Islamic group after the whole host, nothing personal), and lately it's either painfully slow to load or completely down. So, I haven't done this for about a decade and I'm out of the loop. I'm really not willing to suffer any ads, but since our budgeted is obcenely limited for such fluff, does anyone have recommendations? Are there any more reliable ad-free free hosts? (Probably not, for obvious reasons.) Otherwise, how do you guys handle web hosting? How much does it cost? What's a good balance between reliable and affordable? How much is domain registration nowadays? We don't have our 501(c)(3) status yet so we won't get a deal until later this year, by the way. Anyway, please help. Renaming the Think Tank

Hi buds, let's talk about renaming the Think Tank in order to increase its value as a communal resource. *español abajo* As we talked about during our Bike!Bike! meetings last autumn, the Think Tank is an incredible resource but a clunky and imperfect tool. A main challenge is participation: many collectives do not participate in the Think Tank, and it's hard to bring new collectives on board, so its reach, impact, and value are limited (and maybe even decreasing). The name is one barrier we identified to participation: "The Think Tank" is a confusingly generic name for a listserv about bike collectives, and organizers with limited time and capacity are unlikely to engage with a resource that doesn't seem clearly relevant to their needs and objcetives. So: - Can we rename the Think Tank without losing the backlog of listserv messages? - Who is in a position to actually institute such a change? - What are the practical steps involved in doing so, and the consequences? - What would be a better name? "BikeCollectives" seems like perhaps the easiest, and although it's in English I imagine it's a fairly accessible phrase. "Bike Collectives Think Tank," while fun, is pretty long, and probably less linguistically accessible for non-English-speakers. - While we're at it, is anyone knowledgable about (or interested in looking into) migrating the Think Tank's archive and users from its ancient listserv platform to a more up-to-date, user-friendly replacement, like groups.io or something? I imagine there could be great tools around, like maybe even automatic translation for messages. Ok, what's your thoughts? Como comentamos durante nuestras reuniones de Bike!Bike! el otoño pasado, el Think Tank es un recurso increíble, pero una herramienta torpe e imperfecta. power tools at the Co-op

Hi Folks, We currently have a 5" side grinder, 6" wheel grinder and corded and cordless drills at the Co-op. When we get back in to a larger space, we'll get the drill press out of storage. We have access to lots of construction tools when we need to build something. What power tools do you use at your Co-op? Anybody using other big tools, like a bearing press, or arbor press? I've had a few folks in the community reach out to me over the past few weeks asking about when Bike!Bike! Is this year and I've got nothing to tell them and that doesn't sit right with me. I checked the Facebook page the Bike!Bike! Website and here on this thinktank but there's only been one post (a post I'm incredibly excited by) in the month and a half plus since the meeting. I know a some people myself included need to request off well in advance if they want to make it or time to budget save and plan. Is there somewhere else I should be looking for an official announcement? Does anybody have any information? Let me know! En las últimas semanas, algunas personas de la comunidad se han comunicado conmigo para preguntarme cuándo se celebrará Bike!Bike! este año, pero no tengo nada que decirles y eso no me parece bien. I tried to edit the page for the Asheville Recyclery and it would not work for me, kept getting messages that there were newer edits since I tried to update, but there isn't anything there.
